Harping on Harper

From the Calgary Herald:

Former U.S. vice-president Al Gore has accused the oil industry of financially backing the Tories and their "ultra-conservative leader" to protect its stake in Alberta's lucrative oilsands.

Canadians, Gore said, should vigilantly keep watch over prime minister-designate Stephen Harper because he has a pro-oil agenda and wants to pull out of the Kyoto accord -- an international agreement to combat climate change.

So Albert Gore wants his fans in the eco-movement to maintain a vigilant watch on the "ultra-conservative leader". Being an amateur study of classical mythology, I could not help but be reminded of figures from Greek mythology who were also tasked to maintain a watchful eye.

They were the Harpies, grotesque creatures that merge man and beast, in this case, a hideous woman's head and torso with the wings and lower half of a vicious bird.

Funny how so many of the awful creatures in classical Greek mythology were beings that were as humans that had somehow lost too much of their humanity to nature.

But back to the Harpies.

Their job? To punish Phineas by maintaining a watch over him as he was forced to sit in front of a mouth-watering buffet. When Phineas would reach for the food, a Harpy would sweep in and steal it away, befouling the plate with its own waste.

Seems appropos to me. Ever notice how liberals befoul any discussion of importance, any attempt at rational debate, any attempt to weigh the pros and cons of a decision with serious consequences, with their own verbal waste? Whether it Al Gore labeling Stephen Harper as an "ultra-conservative", or Paul Martin insisting that Stephen Harper will be a pawn of George W Bush, or the cruder works of leftist bloggers and their fans tossing out the Nazi label, the result is always the same.

The sumptious banquet of honest debate is ruined beyond recovery. Like poor Phineas, surrounded by screeching Harpies, we are left wondering what it would have been like.

Al Gore's an idiot. And here's a shocker. The Iraqi WMD are in Syria.

"They were the Harpies, grotesque creatures that merge man and beast, in this case, a hideous woman's head and torso with the wings and lower half of a vicious bird."

Hey! "Harpies". Good name for the new PMO staff.
Let's watch and see if it catches on. You might even make Wikipedia as the source.

I think you just handed the enemy some ammunition there, Angry...Harper...Harpies...now we'll never hear the end of it :/

It's an apt analogy though, and true.

Is Al Gore running for dog catcher, or something?

He's setting himself up, as the leader of the moonbat-left. Warning the world of the evil conspiracies of oil companies.

Can we say: Ultra-left Washed-up American Democrat presidential candidate Al Gore?

Also why do the left have a conniption fit, when any right-wingish person has something to say about Canadian politics, but applaud when some moonbat moron (like Micheal Moore - hey that rhymes with Al Gore! - coincidence I think not!) notices that Canada exists, and is more than the source of unseasonal weather. Could it be lefty hypocrisy?

Posted by: Curtis at January 26, 2006 05:20 PM

I heard Al Gore won't concede the Palestinian election to Hamas. He thinks he might have won if not for the dangling chad's.

Posted by: fortottawa at January 26, 2006 05:21 PM

Harper should tell Gore, that if he's interested in Canadian politics, the liberal party has a job opening he may consider running for.

Posted by: Curtis at January 26, 2006 05:28 PM

Good one, I caught this same story earlier, anyone want to place bets on who the next american lefty gnashing their teeth over Harper is?

Posted by: AlbertanFromBC at January 26, 2006 05:54 PM

Curtis, sorry, Slick Willie's already first in line for that one, just like in 1992.

Posted by: The Wild Duck at January 26, 2006 06:00 PM

Now that Martin is out of power, the Chretienites can work on statagies to get the Liberals back in power.

Gore's remarks are an IOU to Raymond Chretien, the fmr PM's nephew, who sated before the results of the 2000 U.S. election results, "The Canadian gov't would prefer it if Gore wins."

Harper has much more than Gore to worry about. There's someone of greater threat - Rosie O'Donnell.

Posted by: Jack at January 26, 2006 06:12 PM

Gore and all his Gorbies should listen to what their voters said to them. Gore-away and get over yourselves.
Hollywood Gorbies don't live in the real world so they just follow along with Michael Moore types (actually ILK) and hyper ventilate as if their sole purpose in life is to dictate to real working people how they should live and think.
I guess they will only be happy if Hillary and Balinda lead their respective countries into a slap fight with anyone who hates Bullies and Terrorists.

Posted by: at January 26, 2006 06:21 PM

Gee Al, how does it feel to be irrelevant? I don't give a damn what you think Canadians should do. Take off eh.

Posted by: Ovni at January 26, 2006 07:05 PM

Al Gore was relevant enough to warrant this post and numerous comments. Gore has a point. Harper was supported by oil companies. "The west wants in" includes sweet deals for big oil.

You guys sound like your from Thunder Bay and you have no idea what the west wants when it wants in. You should take time to figure out what it is Harper is trying to fix.

You don't need to go back to ancient Greece to find a comparison to Al Gore

Just go back to late 1960's Beatles...

He's a real nowhere man
sitting in his nowhere land
making all his nowhere plans
for nobody

This is a CP article about Stephen Harper's press conference posted about an hour ago. One quote:

"With a startling efficiency quite foreign to his predecessor, Canada's soon-to-be 22nd prime minister set about meeting the national news media - and by extension the Canadian electorate - in the foyer of the House of Commons."

You should really STOP! and read the entire article to get a good grasp of the organization, direction, and pace the Stephen Harper government is setting. I found it quite remarkable.

Posted by: Chris from Victoria, BC at January 26, 2006 07:37 PM

How about one of the other washed up Democrats, Carter, telling countries that they should fund the new terrorist Hamas 'government'.

I'd post a link to the jp0st.com article, but it won't let me, why not? It won't even let me spell the domain name!

The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, The Prime Minister of Canada.

Hail to the Chief!

Harper's first post-election news conference a model in efficiency, brevity

OTTAWA (CP) - He hasn't even been sworn in yet, but in a 22-minute heartbeat Thursday, Stephen Harper placed his stamp on the country's highest elected office. >>>>

The Libs have been whining about the Conservatives supposed close ties with the American Right. Yet from Rosie and Michael Moore to Al Gore it's the American left that can't seem to keep their mouths shut! Someone should tell them we are their neighbours not their nation. (Sorry, couldn't resist!!)

Posted by: The Good Fight at January 26, 2006 08:17 PM

For Gore to still preach about the environment is kind of ironic, because it was the environmentalists that sunk his presidency bit.

Go check the 2000 vote results. If you add up the Ralph Nader Green Party vote totals to the Gore Democrats votes, then Gore would have carried more states and won the presidency.

Personally, I think that is very amusing.

What gets me shake my head about the Leftist world, is that making constant dire predictions and accusations about conservatives, yet having virtually none pan out, just doesn't phase those people. It doesn't matter what, they can scream blue murder, have it all crumble before their eyes, yet continue on with a new theme without even batting an eye. Just watch with Harper, as prediction after dire prediction fails to come about, they'll just begin a new one. Geopolitically it's even worse... whether Iraq, Iran, GWB, or China, there shouting points (they don't have talking points) pan out so seldom it's embarrassing. Frankly, I actually feel sorry for them sometimes; but then someone like Gore comes along with a diatribe (must be the same Gore who invented the internet), and my sympathy melts pretty quick.

But, you gotta admit, for being wrong so often, they sure are spunky.

Angry,

I defy you to improve upon this thread. Simply priceless.

Al Gore? Just ignore him. That's what we Americans do.

Posted by: Lone Pony at January 26, 2006 10:45 PM

Al Gored and my arse have a few things in common.
I never see either one, And lets just say its better if I don't HEAR from them either!

Oil lobby US polititions are SO close to THEIR oil lobby, they don't know whose pecker to pull out.

..give me a break

Beautiful, I hope the lefties keep dumping all over the man. It just makes it easier for him to surpass their expectations. And he will.

Posted by: Gerry in T.O. at January 26, 2006 11:14 PM

Labelling as a substitute for accurate use of language and honest discussion of the issues is the hallmark of 'McCarthyism' which the 'left' disses so much. In my 40 years of experience, I have generally found 'leftists' to be the most 'politically correct', narrow-minded, intolerant people I have come across. They accuse Christians of what they are, yet, I have found most Christians to be very tolerant indeed.

To AlbertanFromBC:

I guess Ralph Nader will be the next one to join the windbag parade behind Michael Moore, Rosie O'Donnell & Al Gore.

Yankee idea: How about if we put all the Moonbat Lefties from both Canada and the US on that little Hans Island? It could be an arctic Devil's Island.

400 meters of bare rock, Quonset huts and air-dropped MRE rations: populated with the likes of Al Gore, Carolyn Parrish, light-fingered Svend, Jesse Jackson...A lengthy list of over-the-top lefties who wouldn't be missed in continental North America. ;-)

Posted by: Dave at January 27, 2006 12:05 AM

Just who does clown think he is, BOZO?

Americans scream for their right to participate in their political process without outside interference. I think we have that same right.

Steven Harper and his government have been given a mandate (however tenuous) through the democratic efforts of the people of this country (without cheating I might add). Perhaps he should start advocating the use of cruise missiles to teach us a lesson.

Whether he likes our choice or not, unless he is willing to move to Canada, become a citizen and then attempt to change us by becoming the leader of one of our "progressive" parties, I would suggest he BUTT out and stay in the U.S. Resign yourself to your fate - IRREVELANCY!

Cheers

Gerry

Outside of election times, I think its alright for Americans to comment on our politics. We comment on theirs - not that they notice - but turnabout is fair play.

I think it was really neat idea, Harper sticking it to the Americans over arctic sovereignty. Its an issue that the Americans don't really care about, and gives him a 'out' by standing up for Canada. Its a win - win situation, he can stand up to them, they can shrug it of with a "whatever". They're not offended, and the Anti-American Toronto Intelligentsia (using the term intelligentsia loosely) have some thing to wag on about.

Posted by: Curtis at January 27, 2006 01:19 AM

How do all you people find time to read this blog and post comments, when you should all be "vigillantly watching our new ultra-conservative leader". He might withdraw from Kyoto while our guard is down.

Posted by: rob at January 27, 2006 02:03 AM

Anyone with a socialistic-left thinking mind will from now on come out to bring down the promising conservative political revival.

Posted by: Jon at January 27, 2006 08:57 AM

Al Gore has probably done Stephen Harper a favor. By sticking his nose into Canada's business and publicly criticizing the choice of a plurality of voters he's undoubtedly offended many Canadians.

The article about Stephen Harper's news conference was very interesting.

"Time may prove the man that many Canadians considered unelectable will fit the mould of prime minister better than they imagined. "

Good luck with your new government. It's going to be exciting to watch how things develop!

Why on earth would anyone in Canada care a whit about what failed politician Al Gore says? It'd be like John Turner or Kim Campbell criticizing the US.

Doesn't Big Al have a more important mission, like improving the internet he invented?

Sometimes my broadband connection slows down. Man, I hate it when it does that...

"Can we say: Ultra-left Washed-up American Democrat presidential candidate Al Gore?"

No, we can't. The Conservative party is actually to the left of the Democrat party; Al Gore is even more right-wing than "ultraconservative" Stephen Harper.

Posted by: Ed Minchau at January 27, 2006 09:52 AM

Bummer... I really liked the Washed-up democrat presidential candidate. By Conservative party, being part of the Democrat party, I presume you mean American Conservatives - Canadian Conservatives have traditionally been linked to the Republicans. (mostly by the Moon bat wing of the NDP or Liberal parties)

This is the problem with using the whole left-right scale on modern political movements and leaders. They're all over the map. Iam sure Al Gore is to the right of Harper on many issues. Mostly issues around Guns and Crime - I imagine. This is in part, because of the political cultural difference between Canada and the US. Al Gore couldn't survive as a viable political candidate if he was consistently to the left of Harper on every issue.

Posted by: Curtis at January 27, 2006 10:24 AM

Steve, I thought you were against polarizing? Now you're calling people who disagree with Stephen Harper "screeching harpies?" Way to take the high road.

Posted by: thickslab at January 27, 2006 10:29 AM

I love this quote too: "Ever notice how liberals befoul any discussion of importance, any attempt at rational debate, any attempt to weigh the pros and cons of a decision with serious consequences, with their own verbal waste?"

Isn't that what you're doing, Steve?

Posted by: thickslab at January 27, 2006 10:30 AM

Thickslab,

I think you're off base here. As yet Harper hasn't even taken over as PM, much less had the time to implement his "extreme right wing hidden western big oil agenda". At least give the guy a chance before you pass judgement and demonize him. Who knows, you might even like the results of what he does.

Cheers

Gerry

Posted by: gerryinmontreal at January 27, 2006 10:59 AM

Gerry, I wasn't talking about Stephen Harper. I'm writing about Steve Janke, who bemoans the polarizing effect of "moobats" who hate Stephen Harper, yet pulls the same trick when it comes to Liberals.

Posted by: thickslab at January 27, 2006 11:17 AM

Kudos to our Prime Minister elect. Stephen set the agenda, and owned it all the way! His remarks on our sovereignty were a calculated move to disarm his critics. It also shows Bush and Wilkins that he is not for sale and is to be respected. People like G.W.B. do not respect whimps (not to mention any names). They respect honesty and integrity. Diplomacy is the key to negotiating with the U.S., not wish washy dithering.

p.s. Rosie, if you don't like the air in Alberta, stay the hell out. Ditto Moore, Gore.

Posted by: Cheri at January 27, 2006 11:39 AM

In fairness, I can see thickslab's point. I can see how liberals (or lefties in general) could be 'up in arms' over the comparison. Perhaps Steve Janke took the analogy a little too far, I for one, was unaware of the specifics of a harpies mythical existence.

The whole situation lends its self so well to the analogy, that its hard to let it go. I wonder how long it will take comedians to start calling Harper's self-appointed oversight committee, harpies...

Posted by: Curtis at January 27, 2006 01:07 PM

All I can think of when I think of Al Gore (which, thankfully, isn't often enough to cause me too much distress) is what I thought the morning of September 11, 2001. "Thank God for Florida."
