In reaction to the Danish cartoon controversy, an Iranian newspaper promised to put on a contest where cartoonists would compete for a prize honouring the best cartoon mocking the Holocaust.
Who knew such a contest would be so popular? They've got entries from all over Europe and North America.
From MSNBC:
An exhibition of more than 200 cartoons about the Holocaust opened Monday as Iran's response to last year's Muslim outrage over a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad in a Danish newspaper [Jyllands-Posten].
The display, showing 204 entries from Iran and abroad, was strongly influenced by the views of Iran's hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who drew widespread condemnation last year for calling the Holocaust a "myth" and saying Israel should be destroyed.
One cartoon by Indonesian Tony Thomdean [sic: I think the name is "Tommy" Thomdean] shows the Statue of Liberty holding a book on the Holocaust in its left hand and giving a Nazi-style salute with the other.
Two hundred cartoons? Those were just the best ones:
Masoud Shojai, director of the host Caricature House, said a jury looked through 1,200 entries received after the contest was announced in February by the co-sponsor, the Iranian newspaper Hamshahri.
It came following worldwide protests by Muslims against the Muhammad cartoon published by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. Many Muslims considered the cartoon offensive and a violation of traditions prohibiting images of their prophet.
A lot of idle cartoonists in the Middle East? Hardly. The cartoons came from all over:
Hamshahri said it wanted to test the West's tolerance for drawings about the Nazi killing of 6 million Jews in World War II. The entries on display came from nations including United States, Indonesia and Turkey.
Interesting. So I took it upon myself to find a list of the participants. It took some looking, but here it is (sorry about the formatting -- the original source is a bit of a mess):
The list of Participants in International Cartoonet Festival About Danish Cartoons and Holocaust International cartoon contest-Holocaust Administered by Hamshahri Daily with the Cooperation of Iran Cartoon "International Cartoon" Holocaust West's reaction towards holocaust creates serious questions in the mind of world's peoples, such as: 1) Why discussion is not allowed concerning holocaust, if it is a historical fact. 2) The holocaust had been finished and nothing can be done for it. A Canadian, Marc Pageau, is listed as a participant. From Pageau's website:
Now, we're at it! For two weeks that it was announced by Iran, the international contest of caricatures on the Holocaust has at last been launched.
I will also participate myself!
;0)
However, I will respect a certain personal and professional ethics while trying not to offend anybody in this debate on the freedom of expression by the caricature. I consider ALL RELIGIONS on the same equal footing and I intend well to treat them all in the same way, i.e. by the silly things of which they go all guilty.
If there are some fundamentalist integrist ones among the readers of this blog, it doesn't matters they are Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hinduists, Raelians or others, you will always be able to sue me!
I will never thank you enough for it, because this surely will make me famous in the whole world and you also, for the demonstration of your own stupidity!
I will publish my caricatures on this blog as soon as the results of the contest will be known and as I will get the O.K. for it by the organization of the contest.
I guess we'll have to wait until September to Pageau's contribution to mocking the Holocaust, which he equates to criticism of religion. Of course, he might of submitted a satirical entry aimed at Iran, but then why would his name appear on the list?
In the mean time, I invite fellow bloggers from around the world to look through the list and consider the scribblers who appear on the list who are from your neck of the woods. Let's hear what they have to say about the Holocaust.
While you do that, let us spare a moment for the men who have been assigned to the solemn task of judging these cartoons.
Update: Not everyone was a willing participant. And this American was assured by the Iranians that they have no intention of ridiculing the Holocaust -- and takes us to task for being so naive and unsophisticated.

Hello Steve!
Thanks for the link and the visits you are sending to my blog. I just hope that the visitors will take the time to take a look at my little cartoons...
;0)
I was really surprised to see that I am the only Canadian that has participated to this contest.
I just sent them (irancartoons.com) 4 cartoons (on the possibility of 5). I've not received any comments nor feedbacks on the cartoons from them and on the results of the contest yet (I'm not sure that they appreciated my cartoons!).
I will post them on my blog as soon as possible, on the next weeks.
For those interested to see them, it is a rendez-vous!.
For the French speaking visitors, there is a French version of my blog.

A racist comment...
How surprising?
Welcome to Harperistan!!!

Marc your a scumbag and a terrorist supporter by looks of things. Why dont you go over to the ME where you belong and take your anti american crap with you!

Typical reaction. English Canadians who want an independent Quebec are racists? Yeah right! But then again, the average Quebecer's view of the world would be incomplete without a mention of the evil, cloven-footed Anglo-Saxons, with horns coming out of their heads and pitch-forks in their hands. Dirty rotten foreign-warmongers and imperialists! Oh, why oh why do we do what we do to the poor French! Bollocks. Marc, I'm going to pay you the compliment you deserve, I'm going to ignore you, your blog, and your cartoons as are the rest of us I would imagine. But good luck in the contest, and make certain to represent your province proudly!

How does a contest in Iran degenerate into sniping about Canadian politics? Maybe I should compare you all to the Nazis and end this pointless name calling now.

Bravo!
Look at that!
Democracy is really SICK in Canada!
You have a different political opinion and what you get is only PERSONAL INSULTS for those by COURAGEOUS PERSONS who send them ANONYMOUSLY!
What's your point?
Shut up!!! We have the truth?...
You are the same as the fascistlamists and the nazisraelis : warmongers!
And too bad for the innocents lives (especially women and young children, whatever their nationalities) who die from these disgusting wars...
It looks like I am in «Bushistan»...
Pitiful and shameful!
I am sorry for Steve, it seems that some of your readership is totally retarded narrow-minded right-wing extremist...
But dear «friends», remember that the Conservative Party absolutely needs Québec voters to form the Canadian Government!
Now, continue your insults. I like them!
I collect them as sort of trophies in my cartoonist carrer.
Have a nice day!
Hehehe...

Steve Janke wrote this about my participation in the contest :
« I guess we'll have to wait until September to Pageau's contribution to mocking the Holocaust, which he equates to criticism of religion. Of course, he might of submitted a satirical entry aimed at Iran, but then why would his name appear on the list? »
What?...
Do I have read this really carefully?
Steve, you are judging me guilty of mocking Holocaust without having seen any of my cartoons?
Wow! I am very impressed by your HONESTY!
What kind of democratic person are you?
« Of course, he might of submitted a satirical entry aimed at Iran, but then why would his name appear on the list? »
By this statement and this reasoning, you consider and you stipulate that every and each Muslim is dishonest by the fact he (or she) comes from Iran?...
Am I wrong?
Posted by: Marc Pageau at August 16, 2006 09:30 AM
Each and every participant in a contest given official sanction by the Iranian government in a government-controlled media outlet whose theme is to challenge the legitimacy or seriousness of the Holocaust (as per President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's statements on the subject) is, in the absence of any other evidence, suspect of agreeing or supporting Ahmadinejad's view of history.
Especially if that participant's name appears on the approved list of participants.
I could be wrong, and I said as much in the post.
Why don't you give us a sneak peak? If not, why don't we table this until September? I'm not sure if I should wish you good luck.
Posted by: Steve Janke at August 16, 2006 02:47 PM
Marc, you complain about the personal attacks on yourself, and yet the first reply from you after someone else's comment was that they were a "racist". Curiously, I can't seem to find any evidence of "racism" in his comment...
Oh, and this gem: "some of your readership is totally retarded narrow-minded right-wing extremist". And of course, Democracy is "SICK" in Canada - that is, when the people don't agree with you.
Shall we chalk this one up to plain old narcissistic hypocrisy? Or might the cartoons in question reveal a little anti-semitism as well?

In last February, during the Mohammed cartoons world wide controversy, I posted on my blog (English and French version) several messages titled like that :
- THE MANY FACES OF MUHAMMED
- THE MANY FACES OF MUHAMMED : SUPPORT DENMARK
- THE MANY FACES OF MUHAMMED : MY CARTOON OF A PROPHET!
- THE MANY FACES OF MUHAMMED : TRY GOOGLE IMAGES!
- THE MANY FACES OF MUHAMMED : ISLAMIST HYPOCRISY?
- THE MANY FACES OF MUHAMMED : CARTOON WAR OVERVIEW
- THE MANY FACES OF MUHAMMED : INTERNATIONAL CARTOON CONTEST ON HOLOCAUST
- THE MANY FACES OF MUHAMMED : INTERNATIONAL ANTI-SEMITIC CARTOON CONTEST BY ISRAEL
- THE MANY FACES OF MUHAMMED : VISITS FROM THE MUSLIM WORLD
- THE MANY FACES OF MUHAMMED : VISIT BY AN ISLAMIST HACKER?
- THE MANY FACES OF MUHAMMED : INTERNATIONAL DRAWING CONTEST ON MUHAMMED
Please, read them before judging me too much fast.
I've posted the controversial cartoons.
On the French version, I received turkish and French insults.
My blog is listed in the FATWA ME! blog's l.i.n.k.s. since that time...
I was in favor of the publication of the controversial cartoons in the newspaper all over the world.
And you think that I am antisemitic?
Are you SERIOUS?...
Posted by: Marc Pageau at August 17, 2006 12:19 PM
Excuse me, I'm a bit in flame these days.
The reason is the shameful text written by the dishonest Barbara Kay in the NATIONAL POST titled « The Rise of Quebecistan » published last 9th August 2006, full of clichés and bullshit prejudices about the Québécois.
Why English Canadians better informed about Québec don't show some disapproval against such lies printed in the lone national newspaper in Canada ?
That is shameful, pitiful and pathetic!
Why do you suffer this hate and mean propaganda without saying a word?
Antisemitic Incidents in 2005 according to the B'Nai Brith Canada (please note that the statistics come from their own website!) :
Québec: 133 (16.0 % of the Canada)
Ontario: 544 (65.6 % of the Canada)
Note that the population of Québec is slightly inferior to the one of Ontario...
You know what B'Nai Brith Canada is?
I invite you to take a look at their w.e.b.s.i.t.e.. I'm sorry, I tried to put the direct l.i.n.k. to it but it was not possible : I only get the message «Your comment could not be submitted due to questionable content: l.i.n.k.s. c.o.m.»...
????
Questionable content, the B'Nai Brith Canada?...
Hahaha!!!
Boy, you make my day!!!
;0)
I hope you will have the honesty and the decency to take a look at their w.e.b.s.i.t.e.!

Pheeew!
It seems that we don't share the same culture...
Years ago, I was in Montreal downtown, going out of the metro, a bit disoriented and lost and I asked somebody in French for an information. This kind person answered me angrily in English : SPEAK THE LANGUAGE OF THIS COUNTRY!!!
Can you tell me the same sort of stories?

I wrote it after the following comment, written anonymously by FREE :

So, for you this kind comment is intelligent, open-minded, moderated, tolerant and don't come from a reader of this blog?
Explain me how, please! I'm curious to see if we speak the same language (English of course!).
And you reproach to me not to be agree with it?
Man! I suspect lack of intelligence here, my dear Aaron G...

If you judge me as an antisemitic because you suppose that I mock the Holocaust, guilty of having drawn 4 little cartoons in in my participation of an International Holocaust cartoon contest in Iran, what about William Lyon Mackenzie King?
William Lyon Mackenzie King, supposedly the most beloved Prime Minister of Canada... In 1999 King was ranked by historians to be the greatest of Canada's Prime Ministers. (Granatstein & Hillmer, Prime Ministers: Ranking Canada's Leaders).!
December 29, 1921 – June 28, 1926
September 25, 1926 – August 6, 1930
October 23, 1935 –November 15, 1948
Anti-semitism
King hoped an outbreak of war in the 1930s could be avoided, and he supported the appeasement policies of the British. He met with Adolf Hitler who, he remarked in his journal, came across as "a reasonable and caring man ... who might be thought of as one of the saviors of the world." Telling a Jewish delegtion that "Kristallnact" might turn out to be a blessing," he refused to allow Jewish refugees who were attempting to leave Nazi Germany, entry into Canada.
Despite pledges of support from Canada's Jewish community, in June 1939 King also refused to allow a boatload of 900 desperate Jewish refugees (aboard the passenger ship St. Louis), refuge in Canada. When asked how many Jews would be allowed to immigrate immediately after World War II, one of his civil servants famously quipped, "None is too many".
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, King’s government oversaw the forcible internment of all Japanese-Canadians from Canada’s west coast, giving 22,000 B.C. residents 24 hours to pack. While they were incarcerated, the Canadian government confiscated and sold their property and belongings at public auction. After the war, King offered Japanese-Canadians the option of “repatriation" to a war-ravaged Japan, and Canadians of Japanese origin were not allowed to move back to coastal areas until his government fell several years later.
Wow!

Hello Steve and all,
Last Wednesday, I was contacted by Bryan Munn, director of the Canadian Comic Art Centre (www.canadacomics.ca), Guelph Ontario, Canada in order to answer some questions for his blog : Sequential Canadian Comix News & Culture www.sequential.spiltink.org .
These are the questions he asked me :
1. Why did you enter the contest? What are your opinions about the contest?
2. What are your opinions about the controversial Danish cartoons?
3. What was your cartoon (can we see a copy)?
4. What do you hope other people in Canada or around the world will take away from viewing your cartoon?
5. Is this contest anti-Semitic ?
As I find these questions very interesting to clarify my opinions and my position on ME politics, I accepted to answer them in a very detailed way.
I've just sent him the e-mail with the answers 3 hours ago. And I included 1 of the 4 cartoons for the contest. I don't know when he will publish it on his blog, but I think it will be as soon as possible, maybe next Monday.
I will publish all the cartoons on my own blogs next September.
This a part of the answer of the last question (kind of scoop) :
5. Is this contest anti-Semitic?
That doesn't make sense for me!
If I draw a cartoon mocking or criticizing the stupidity of Foreign Politic of the United States, I am anti-American.
If I draw a cartoon mocking or criticizing the stupidity of Foreign Politic of Israel, I am anti-Semitic.
If I draw a cartoon mocking or criticizing the stupidity of the Islam, I am anti-Muslim.
If I draw a cartoon mocking or criticizing the stupidity of the actual Government of Canada, I am anti-Canadian.
If I draw a cartoon mocking or criticizing the stupidity of the actual Government of Québec, I am anti-Québécois.
And if I draw a cartoon who shows a dog, I am anti-animal.
If I draw a cartoon who shows a stone, I am anti-mineral.
If I draw a cartoon who shows a tree, I am anti-vegetal.
Where would the anti-everything stop?
Can I draw something without being insulted?
If not, I believe that our beautiful Western Democracy is totally sick...
If I am forced to be anti-something, then I am anti-stupidity!
For those interested, it is a rendez-vous!
