President Barack Obama drops in for a visit, and by all accounts, it seemed to have been a constructive visit with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
I'll more to say on that in future posts, but to start off, I want to comment on what had to be the most patronizing comments a Canadian politician has ever gotten away with. Bob Rae praises Barack Obama for making eye contact and for being, well, normal:
Bob Rae, Liberal MP for Toronto-Centre and one of Canada's most well-known politicians, seemed as excited about Obama's visit as ordinary Canadians were.
Rae, who attended the meeting, said he was "struck by how down to earth" Obama was and said that president made eye-contact with everyone.
Said that the president made eye-contact with everyone? At family get-togethers, I impress upon my children the importance of making eye contact.
If Bob Rae was talking about a four-year-old, this would be appropriate, but gushing about how an adult was so good at making eye contact? Like Rae was surprised by it?
Or maybe Bob Rae's man crush on Barack Obama runs so hot that Rae is desperate to be quoted saying something nice about Obama. You know, in the hope that Obama gets wind of it, and gives Rae a phone call to say thanks.
I don't know if I should be more embarrassed by Bob Rae or for Barack Obama.
