Karlheinz Schreiber is finally gone:
The German government expressed relief Monday over the arrival in Munich of Karlheinz Schreiber, whose decade-long battle to avoid extradition on charges of fraud, corruption and tax evasion came to a halt over the weekend.
"The German Government welcomes the extradition of Mr. Schreiber by the Canadian authorities," an official said in a statement sent by e-mail to Canwest News Service.
"The federal state of Bavaria has tried for the extradition for years. The continuation of the criminal proceedings is now a matter of the Bavarian judiciary."
The 75-year-old German-Canadian businessman and arms dealer arrived on an Air Canada flight Monday morning.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
But now the Germans have to deal with this blowhard:
[Schreiber] said his arrival would be the "greatest thing" for the left-wing Social Democratic Union, a party that is part of Germany's coalition government and the CDU's top rival.
"It would start a huge investigation and . . . they would think they could win the next election," Schreiber told Canadian reporters.
He said the government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper wanted to be rid of him because he was an embarrassment to Mulroney and to the Conservative party.
"The whole approach here is to get my mouth shut and to get me out of the country," he said.
In a sense he's right. A lot of people would love to have Karlheinz Schreiber finally shut up. Not because he has anything important to say. But because, important or not, he just won't saying it, again and again and again...
But the best part is his own evaluation of the judgment to finally deport him:
"Mr. Schreiber has travelled a long road in fighting his extradition to Germany," Justice Barbara Ann Conway said yesterday in her ruling. "He is now at the end of that road."
The decision, according to Schreiber, is the "biggest political justice scandal in history."
Biggest political justice scandal in history? How is it that anyone took anything this guy said seriously?
