Are we going to have an election this fall? If the crypto-conservative unelected leader of the Liberal Party, Michael Ignatieff, is to be believed, we will.
But then Michael Ignatieff should not be believed, at least in general.
Still, he has been particularly shrill of late, and fellow Liberals are taking him seriously this time. So much so that they are whispering to the media:
The senior Liberal was seething over the cellphone from Sudbury, where his federal party had gathered to plot their electoral suicide.
"Wanna hear my analogy to this mess?," he confided. "The car is ready and moving forward. Unfortunately there's a cliff straight ahead. But the real problem is that the driver is accelerating because he thinks he can jump the canyon."
Not only does this undermine the Liberal Party just as the members are trying to get an election machine off the ground, it sets the stage for the post-election dismissal of Michael Ignatieff as party leader. Should the Liberals lose (and plenty of pundits are saying that the Liberals can't claim anything akin to momentum), this senior Liberal and others will attempt to replace Michael Ignatieff moments after the polls close.
