Opposing prorogation -- by the numbers

Oh no!   A bunch of people are upset about the prorogation of Parliament:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper's decision to shut down Parliament for the next two months is facing a growing public uprising, which is building on social networks across Canada and is set to spill over in dozens of protest rallies this month.

"Get back to work" is the rallying cry on a Facebook page that has been gaining thousands of supporters each day since it was launched last week - approaching 20,000 by the end of the day on Monday.

Paul Wells points out the ineffectiveness of this sort of thing.  Jonathan Kay and Kelly McParland add their insights, but really, these are just opinions.

I give you quantitative analysis.

I've created a very complex computer model using similar programs that are used to model the climate.  That way, if I don't like what the model tells me, I can go ahead and make up new results, and just tell you what I want you to hear, the same way climatologists ignore their models when it suits them to spin whatever story they care to tell.

Here is what my model is telling me (or not, but then, I know I'm right, regardless of the data, the way climatologists are right, regardless of the data):

  • Of the 20,000 people who have signed up, five voted for the Conservatives, ever, in any election.  Three of them did it on a dare, one because she left her glasses at home, and the fifth lived in Garth Turner's riding in 2008.
  • 42% of the people who joined this Facebook group join all Facebook groups, in some sort of weird I-belong-to-more-Facebook-groups-than-you-do contest.
  • 87% of the people who joined the Facebook group would drop out immediately if told that they would have to pay to remain group members.
  • 15% of the people who joined are really looking for dates.
  • 100% of the people who joined are furious about Stephen Harper proroguing parliament.
  • 100% of the people who joined are furious about Stephen Harper appointing Conservatives to the Senate.
  • 100% of the people who joined are furious about Stephen Harper's choice in ties.
  • 100% of the people who joined will not be able to convince a single Canadian outside of this group that proroguing Parliament for a handful of weeks will matter.
  • 100% of the people who joined will not be able to convince a single Canadian outside of this group that they are not chronic complainers who will jump at any zero-risk zero-cost zero-effort  opportunity to "oppose" the Conservatives, even if it has zero effect.
